How do I access the NDIS?
To access a psychosocial recovery coach, you must first have an approved NDIS plan that includes funding for psychosocial recovery coaching. Talk to your Local Area Coordinator (LAC), Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) Coordinator, or NDIS Planner about your support needs and request psychosocial recovery coaching if it's appropriate for your situation.
1. Confirm Your Eligibility for the NDIS
Before you can access a psychosocial recovery coach, you first need to confirm your eligibility for the NDIS. To be eligible, you must:
• Reside in Australia and be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa.
• Be aged between 7 and 65 years old.
• Have a permanent and significant disability, including psychosocial disability, that affects your ability to participate in everyday activities.

Familiarise yourself with the process and conduct research Before you get started, it is crucial to acquire knowledge about the necessary steps involved, beginning from the eligibility requirements to providing supporting evidence for your disability. The NDIS provides two lists of disability types: one that is highly likely to be approved for funding (List A), and another that may be approved but requires a functional capacity assessment and additional supporting evidence to demonstrate the permanence or impact of the disability on daily living (List B). Understanding which list your disability falls under will assist you in preparing thoroughly and gathering the appropriate information and evidence.
List A - Conditions that are highly likely to meet the disability requirements.
List B - Permanent conditions with variable functional capacity that generally necessitate further assessment of functional capacity.
In addition, it is beneficial to familiarise yourself with the process of reapplying or appealing a decision in case it becomes necessary.
More information on NDIS eligibility can be found on the NDIS website www.ndis.gov.au
2. Develop Your NDIS Plan
Once you are deemed eligible for the NDIS, you will work with a local area coordinator or planner to develop your individualised NDIS plan. This plan will outline your goals, needs, and the supports you require to achieve your desired outcomes. Be sure to discuss the inclusion of psychosocial recovery coaching in your plan.
• Share your experiences and how a psychosocial recovery coach can help you on your journey.
• Discuss the goals you would like to achieve with the help of a recovery coach, such as building resilience, improving mental health, or developing social skills.
It is essential to be open and honest during this planning process to ensure you receive the most suitable support.
3. Connect with a Psychosocial Recovery Coach
Now that your NDIS plan includes psychosocial recovery coaching, it's time to find a coach that best suits your needs.
When selecting a recovery coach, consider the following factors:
• Their experience and expertise in your specific mental health condition or traumatic experience.
• The working style and approach of the coach, as well as their ability to make you feel comfortable and supported.
• Available feedback or testimonials from others who have worked with the coach.
Once you've found a suitable recovery coach, contact them to discuss your needs and goals, and to schedule your first session.
Remember, recovery is a journey that requires patience, resilience, and support. By following these steps, you are taking control of your recovery and empowering yourself towards a brighter future.
